Diversity Training

Why are Employee Resource Groups important?

Employee Resource Groups play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive workplace by representing diverse voices and advocating for change. ERGs are important because they:

  • Amplify Diverse Voices: ERGs provide a platform for underrepresented employees to share their experiences and perspectives, ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
  • Promote Inclusion: By fostering a sense of community and belonging, ERGs help create a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
  • Drive DEI Initiatives: ERGs are often at the forefront of advocating for and implementing DEI initiatives, helping to create equitable opportunities for all employees.
  • Support Professional Development: ERGs offer members opportunities for leadership development, networking, and career advancement.

Despite their importance, many ERGs face challenges such as lack of structure, overburdened volunteers, and limited impact. Our ERG Training Course addresses these challenges by providing structured training and support, enabling ERGs to function effectively and drive lasting DEI impact.

    Case Study

A relevant case study involves our work with the Cultural Diversity Staff Led Network in Australia’s leading insurance company. When the insurer approached MindTribes, their Employee Resource Group (ERG) had undergone multiple formations and re-formations, struggling to maintain consistency and impact. Our initial step was to review existing qualitative data from engagement survey results and previous documentation created by former chairs of the group.

To gain a deeper understanding of the group’s challenges and opportunities, we conducted seven listening sessions with employees who identified as racially and ethnically diverse. These sessions provided invaluable insights into the lived experiences of these employees, revealing key areas where the Staff Led Network needed to focus its efforts.

Using the qualitative data gathered, we shifted the group’s focus from simply aiming for representational diversity by 2030 to prioritizing cultural safety and inclusion. This change in focus was crucial in making the Network more relevant and impactful. We then facilitated advocacy sessions at the executive and board levels, helping the ERG chairs articulate the importance of cultural safety and secure the necessary support from senior leaders.

In addition to strategic planning and advocacy, we conducted six capability-building sessions with ERG group members. These sessions provided the group with the skills and knowledge needed to implement their plans effectively. As a result, senior executives who previously struggled to articulate the case for racial and cultural diversity became active allies and advocates. The Network members were able to plan their 2023 activities with greater clarity, investment, and executive support, operating in line with a well-defined change roadmap.

The impact of our support was significant. The Cultural Diversity Staff Led Network experienced increased advocacy and support from senior executives, clearer activity planning, and a more structured and effective network. The transformation led to a stronger, more inclusive organisational culture, demonstrating the power of well-supported and strategically focused employee resource groups.
