Why Anti-Racism Training is Essential for Every Workplace

Anti-racism in the workplace involves actively identifying, challenging, and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies, practices, and attitudes. It goes beyond being non-racist and requires proactive efforts to address and dismantle racial biases and inequalities.

Our diversity consultants lead Anti-Racism Training, focusing on educating employees about the nature and impact of racism, both overt and subtle, and providing practical tools for creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace. This training helps individuals understand their own biases, learn how to challenge discriminatory behaviours, and support colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Anti-Racism Training is essential for creating a workplace where all employees feel valued and respected.

Case Study: Transforming Workplace Culture Through Anti-Racism Training

A large community legal service provider in Victoria engaged MindTribes to address negative behaviours related to race and ethnicity within their organisation. The Chief People Officer and CEO aimed to gather data on these behaviours, incorporating other intersections such as gender, age, disability, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This data was intended to inform learning actions for executives to restore and build racial justice at work and in delivering legal services to the community.

The program began with listening sessions, focus groups, and qualitative behavioural interviews with leaders to gather initial qualitative data. This was followed by designing and deploying a survey to validate the initial findings. The survey results were analysed and reported back to executives and the CEO through briefing sessions. Two learning sessions were then conducted for leaders, focusing on creating personal learning action plans to promote racial justice, with follow-up sessions to ensure these actions were embedded.

The data gathered guided staff-led networks to improve advocacy and collaborate effectively with sponsors. Leaders and the CEO formed a community of practice on racial justice, unifying their approach to reducing negative behaviours, including racism and microaggressions. They developed individual and joint collaborative plans, providing transparency, clarity, and a sense of ownership. This approach led to more informed and prioritised diversity action plans, enhancing the overall culture and inclusivity within the organisation.
