Qualitative Data Gathering

MindTribes‘ Qualitative Data Gathering is designed to provide deep insights into the lived experiences of employees within your organisation. We gather rich, nuanced data by leveraging expert facilitation and behavioural techniques.

Why is qualitative data important in DEI?

Qualitative data provides the context and depth needed to understand the complexities of diversity, equity, and inclusion within an organisation. It captures the rich, detailed experiences and perspectives of employees that supplement the quantitative data. This type of data provides a deeper understanding of the cultural and social dynamics within an organisation, revealing the nuances of employee experiences, attitudes, and perceptions.

It uncovers the underlying reasons behind the numbers, allowing organisations to identify specific barriers to inclusion and areas for improvement that may not be evident through quantitative data alone. By listening to employees’ stories and experiences, organisations can gain insights into the lived realities of their diverse workforce, helping to create more targeted and effective DEI initiatives. This approach ensures that the voices of all employees, particularly those from marginalised or underrepresented groups, are heard and considered in the decision-making process.

Furthermore, qualitative data fosters empathy and understanding among employees and leaders by highlighting the personal and emotional aspects of diversity and inclusion. When organisations share these stories, they can humanize the DEI issues and drive more meaningful engagement and commitment from all members of the organisation. This deepened understanding can lead to more inclusive policies, practices, and a workplace culture that genuinely values diversity, ultimately driving higher employee satisfaction, retention, and overall organisational performance.

Case Study

A world-class university in Victoria engaged MindTribes to collect data and provide consulting services to understand the lived experiences of racially and culturally underrepresented staff and students and to inform actionable recommendations for a whole-of-university strategy.

The data collection process included 15 listening sessions held over five weeks with a total of 102 attendees. These sessions aimed to gather in-depth qualitative insights into the experiences of racism within the university. In addition, a survey was designed and deployed, capturing both qualitative and quantitative data from 500+ respondents, including students and staff from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.

The qualitative data gathered from the listening sessions revealed detailed and nuanced experience of racism within the university, including microaggressions, racial bias, and a lack of cultural safety. The survey data supplemented these findings, providing a broader evidence base.

The comprehensive data analysis and reporting provided by MindTribes informed the development of targeted actions for the strategy and action plan. These actions included improving cultural competency training, enhancing support services for racially diverse staff and students, and establishing more effective and culturally responsive complaints processes. The data-driven recommendations aimed to create a more inclusive and equitable university environment.
