How Our Psychological Safety Training Transformed Workplace Culture: A Case Study
The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and MindTribes collaborated on the Safer Workplaces for Women of Colour project, funded by WorkSafe Victoria. Research highlighted significant barriers to reporting incidents, including a lack of trust and fear of repercussions. The project aimed to address these issues by building the capability of HR professionals and people managers to foster a psychologically safe work environment.
The Psychological Safety Training program was structured into six sessions targeting HR professionals and people managers. The program focused on organisational assessment, capability building, early intervention, ongoing responsibilities, continuous system assessment, and proactive prevention. Participants engaged in group discussions, peer learning, and practical applications through intersectional case studies. This approach ensured that the learning was contextually relevant and immediately applicable.
The program significantly enhanced the capability of participants to manage psychological safety issues effectively. It fostered a more supportive environment, encouraging employees to report negative behaviours and seek help, thereby building trust in the system. Continuous assessment and proactive prevention strategies led to systemic changes within the organisations, addressing the root causes of psychological harm. Additionally, the involvement of senior leaders ensured that psychological safety was prioritised at all organisational levels.
By equipping HR professionals and people managers with the necessary skills, the program promoted a culture of psychological safety, trust, and inclusivity. This report underscores the importance of targeted, intersectional training programs in driving meaningful change and improving workplace safety.
